Focus Question #1

Do you think Chris was anti-social or just lost and disconnected, never really feeling part of the group?

  1. I think he was a little anti-social but he also didn't feel part of his group. that's why he went from city-slickerville to Alaska because he didn't fit in with the city lifestyle.

    2. Learn to Capitalize Graysen; I agree even though there are cities in Alaska. You need to think before you type buddy.

    3. Graysen I do not completely agree with you. I think that he was okay living in the city, and he did not leave because he "didn't fit in with the city lifestyle". He left because he needed to find himself.

    4. Justin yes there are cities but he obviously was not going to Alaska for the cities he wanted to go live in the backcountry. and Dale yes he needed to find himself because he couldn't do that in the city.

    5. Graysen you suggested in your original post that he left "city slickerville", but there are cities in Alaska, though he may have not went there for that you still have a vague post.

    6. I am sorry I'm not a very good blogger. I am trying to say that Chris realized that he couldn't really find himself in the city environment and that he needed to go somewhere where he could be by himself without anyone's help. That somewhere is the Alaskan backcountry. Obviously there are cities in Alaska but that's not where he was going. For him moving from an East Coast city to an Alaskan city would have been pointless.

  2. I agree Chris probably felt like the city life just wasnt for him. So he decided that he would live a happier life living out in the wilderness.

  3. I believe that he was just lost and disconnected. For example at the end of his journey he mentioned something along the lines of happiness only shared with another. this just showed he was not anti-social, but lonely near the end. In the beginning he left because he felt he didnt fit in.

  5. Is there a difference?? if you are lost and disconnected, you aren't going to be the social butterfly. This will label you as antisocial. Chris McCandless is "Antisocial" and "Lost and Disconnected". I think he belongs in the wild but because of the way he was raised he belongs in the city.

  6. I believe he is lost and disconnected with himself. He didn't know who he was so he went out to the wild to "find" himself. He went into the wild to find out his true self because he could in the city with a lot of people. He had to be alone.

  7. I think he was a little anti-social, but not really. The reason he left on his excursion was to find himself. Not just to get away from people, but he needed to be by himself in order to find who he really was.

    1. I agree with this. He had to fine his true self but had to be alone and the wild was the only place for him to go.

  8. I do not believe that he was anti-social or disconnected. I think that Chris just had a different way of dealing with things. Some people are repress things, and eventually you have to deal with them. I think that Chris didn't know how to handle some of the situations that he grew up in, and he didn't know where he was going in life. I think that everyone has these problems, and I think that everyone deals with them on their own level. Chris' found that solitude helped him, and so that is what he did. In fact, Chris was never really anti-social. Even when he was on the road he made friends and was social with people. I believe that the only reason that he cut his ties was because he knew that he needed to find himself, and he didn't want people to try to stop him or slow him down.
